Nine of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

A man sits with arms folded in front of nine cups arranged on a shelf behind him, thoroughly pleased with himself.

Traditionally this is the wish card: what you asked for arrives.

Upright: satisfaction, wishes granted, contentment, pleasure, enough

Reversed: dissatisfaction, smugness, getting it and not wanting it

Upright, the Nine of Cups is satisfaction. A wish granted, a goal met, a period of genuine contentment. It is one of the most straightforwardly positive cards for a specific hope.

It also carries enjoyment of the physical and sensory: good food, comfort, pleasure taken without guilt. The card’s only reservation is that this satisfaction is personal rather than shared.

Reversed, satisfaction is missing. Either the wish does not arrive, or it does and turns out not to be what you wanted. That second version is the more instructive one.

It can also mark smugness, or pleasure pursued past the point where it pleases.

A happy, satisfying relationship. A wish about love being granted. Reversed, a relationship that looks good and does not feel it, or expectations not met.

Job satisfaction, a goal achieved, work that pays and suits you. On money, comfort and sufficiency. Reversed, success that feels hollow, or a role that disappoints after arrival.

Good health and physical wellbeing. Reversed, overindulgence catching up, or dissatisfaction with your body despite no real problem.

Yes.

Is the Nine of Cups the wish card?

Yes, that is its traditional name, and it is generally read as the specific thing you are hoping for coming about.

What does the Nine of Cups reversed mean?

Either the wish does not arrive, or it does and proves unsatisfying. The card often prompts a look at whether you want the right thing.

A card never reads the same way twice, because it is shaped by the question around it and the cards that fall beside it. For a reading on your own situation, call or message Dev Borah on +91 8553108398, or book a session online from anywhere in the world.
